Vandana Sheth, RDN, CDCES, FAND, recognizes the importance of culturally relevant food, because she grew up in a household where dishes like dal and chana masala were commonplace. Being an Indian American, she noticed a consistent lack of personalized and culturally sensitive nutrition guidance available to her community. Now an RD who’s also a global media spokesperson, author and advocate for plant-forward diets, Sheth blends evidence-based nutrition with culturally relevant guidance to empower clients in managing chronic conditions like diabetes. Sheth has not only built a successful practice but has also made a significant impact on the lives of many, helping them achieve healthier lifestyles while honoring their cultural traditions.

“Creating programs that merge traditional Indian flavors with evidence-based nutrition strategies has been incredibly fulfilling, and the positive feedback from clients has reinforced the importance of this work,” she said.

Describe your role.

I am a nationally recognized registered dietitian nutritionist, certified diabetes care and education specialist and CEO of my own nutrition and wellness coaching business. In my role, I blend evidence-based nutrition strategies with practical, culturally relevant guidance to help individuals manage chronic conditions like diabetes. Additionally, I’m a global media spokesperson, sought after speaker and author, passionate about spreading the message of healthy living through a plant forward diet.

Why did you want to work in dietetics?

My passion for nutrition and dietetics stems from my love for food and my desire to help others achieve their best health. Growing up in a vibrant Indian household, I saw firsthand how powerful food can be in bringing people together and supporting well-being. I wanted to turn that passion into a career that not only empowers others to make healthier choices, but also respects their cultural backgrounds and traditions.

How did you get the job at your company?

I founded my own nutrition and wellness coaching business after realizing the need for personalized, culturally sensitive nutrition advice in the community. Building my practice from the ground up allowed me to combine my professional expertise with my entrepreneurial spirit, offering tailored guidance to clients, working with the media and brand partnerships, as well as impacting lives through speaking and writing opportunities.

What do you like about it?

What I love most about my work is the opportunity to make a real difference in people’s lives. Whether it’s helping someone manage their diabetes through diet or guiding them on a plant-based journey, seeing the positive impact of my work is incredibly rewarding. I also appreciate the creative freedom that comes with running my own business, allowing me to explore new ideas and approaches.

What has been the biggest challenge for you as a dietitian working in the industry?

The biggest challenge has been navigating the evolving landscape of dietetics while maintaining a strong foundation in evidence-based practice. With the rise of misinformation online, it’s crucial to stay current and provide clients with accurate, reliable advice. Balancing this with the demands of running a business and being a public figure can be challenging, but it’s also what drives me to keep growing and learning.

What is one thing you wish you had known before starting your career in dietetics?

I wish I had known just how multifaceted the field of dietetics truly is. While my passion for nutrition and helping others was clear from the start, I wasn’t fully prepared for the entrepreneurial aspect of running a successful practice. Understanding the business side of things, from marketing to client management, is just as important as staying updated with the latest nutrition science. This knowledge would have been invaluable early on, especially in building a sustainable and impactful career.

Has there been anything specific that helped you move forward in your role?

Embracing continuous learning and networking has been pivotal in advancing my career. Engaging with other professionals, attending conferences and staying updated on the latest research have all played crucial roles in my growth. Additionally, finding mentors and investing in coaches who could guide me through the complexities of running a business and expanding my influence has been invaluable.

Is there a program or initiative that you are most proud of?

I’m particularly proud of my work in developing culturally sensitive diabetes management programs. As an Indian American dietitian, I recognized the need for dietary guidance that resonates with the cultural practices of the Indian community. Creating programs that merge traditional Indian flavors with evidence-based nutrition strategies has been incredibly fulfilling, and the positive feedback from clients has reinforced the importance of this work.

Have any “hot topics” in the dietetics/nutrition industry impacted the way you do things?

The growing focus on plant-based eating and its role in managing chronic conditions like diabetes has significantly influenced my practice. As a diabetes care and education specialist, I’ve integrated the latest research on plant-based diets into my counseling, offering clients effective strategies for blood sugar management. This trend has underscored the importance of culturally sensitive, evidence-based guidance, allowing me to better support my clients in achieving their health goals while respecting their dietary preferences and cultural backgrounds.
